Understanding  confidence

The world we live in will always have a major impact in how confident we feel. The pace of life in today’s world means that there are numerous factors that affect our confidence levels. The truth is that according to what’s happening in the world around us impacts greatly upon our personalities and changes our confidence levels on a regular basis. We need to understand the secrets of confidence.

The word confidence surrounds us these days and our success is said to be born from it. There are very few situations where a lack of confidence is an advantage. Having confidence allows us to be assertive and to make our way in the world. In fact it is such a crucial part of everyone’s personality that it is amazing that there has been very little research into it. If we could understand what things make us unique we could better understand the elements that affect our confidence.

If we think about things that happen to us in life, we can begin to understand how our confidence is derived. Take your first job, or even you first day at school, you will have been apprehensive, hesitant and unsure. You would seek approval from others that you were conducting yourself correctly or that the actions you were taking were correct. Then after a short while your confidence will have grown, you will be familiar with your surroundings and the tasks expected of you and you are able to complete them without the apprehension and concerns that you had initially.

So we have to think about where confidence comes from. The make up of every individual is completely different. Have you noticed in a group of people there are some that just exude confidence and seem to have little concern about how they are perceived.  Much of it stems from our biological make up and our past experiences perhaps in childhood or adolescence. Some people are naturally shy whilst others are extrovert and outgoing. But what is it that makes us the way we are?

A major influence on the confidence that we have as adults is influenced by our parents. Some parents allow individuals to grow with freedom and develop their personalities naturally and with this confidence is instilled. Unfortunately many parents often focus on the negative aspects of a child and their only objective is to try and remove the child’s limitations or improve upon them. This can have very detrimental effects on a child’s development and restrict their confidence immensely.

Following childhood, being accepted by our peers has a major influence on our level of confidence; such is the desire to be liked and popular.

Then we have the big one. The media. The media plays such a big roll in our life these days that we are constantly being told how we should act and how we should look that we effectively allow ourselves to become programmed. This is exploited by the marketing people who want us to buy their goods and services. They tell us that if we make the right purchases, we will be better people, our lives will be enhanced and that we will fit into society just the way we should. This programmes us to think that we are more confident and that if we fit into each little box we will gain in confidence. Something which we should all remember next time we go shopping is that confidence can not be sold but the lack of it is exploited every day to make us buy.

Just a few of the secrets of confidence ideas if used to examine yourself can help you change the way you are. If you are not confident, then perhaps it is some of your past experiences that have formed you this way and addressing them will change how confident you feel very very quickly. Don’t just accept who you are, some very small changes can have massive effects on your self confidence.
